DOCTORAL THESIS BY SANDRA FAUSTINO
On 19 January 2022, Sandra Faustino defended her doctoral thesis entitled Tales from Decentralized Finance, in which she explores a series of new movements and projects woven around blockchain technology. The viva voce took place online, being hosted by the School of Economics and Management of the University of Lisbon (ISEG-ULisboa). The examination panel was comprised of professors Lana Swartz (University of Virginia), Quinn DuPont (University College of Dublin) and Rafael Marques (ISEG-ULisboa), with the participation of Daniel Seabra Lopes (ISEG-ULisboa), as supervisor. The thesis was approved cum laude.

YEAR2019

TALES OF TRANSFORMATION: THE POLITICS, MORALS AND TECHNOLOGIES OF CONTEMPORARY FINANCE
On 19 March 2019, the project organized its second and last international seminar, hosted by CSG/SOCIUS-ISEG in Lisbon. Organized around the theme of ‘tales of transformation’, this event set out to discuss political and moral imaginings embedded in emerging fintech and consequently explored processes of normalization, naturalization, and legitimation entangled with narrativity. Subjects under debate included forward guidance by the Central Bank, carbon markets, cryptocurrencies, financial inclusion in India and health insurance pricing. The event included presentations by Inês Faria, Sandra Faustino, Rafael Marques, Alexandre Abreu, Daniel Seabra Lopes and the project consultants Ismail Ertürk and Liz MacFall.

SOCIAL STUDIES OF FINANCE GROUP MEETING IN THE UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH
In the upcoming 17th of May we will be joining the Social Studies of Finance group in the University of Edinburgh to talk about our research project and to present some of our collected data and preliminary conclusions. Since the founding of the Social Studies of Finance Association in Paris, the field has developed into a diverse network of scholars around the world, and the University of Edinburgh has established itself as a leading institution for research and education in this field. This group is a multidisciplinary community of scholars working to understand the social, political and technical factors shaping the contemporary practice of finance.

A PANEL ON NEW CURRENCIES
On 26 January 2018, a conference panel entitled New Currencies: Experiences and Global and Local Contexts (Novas Moedas: Experiências e Contextos Globais e Locais) was convened in Lisbon. This panel was organized by Inês Faria and Sandra Faustino as part of the First Annual Meeting of Political Economy, hosted by the University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE). There were presentations by team members Sandra Faustino (The Socio-Technical System of Emerging Currencies and Organizations within the Blockchain: An Ethnography of Economic Space Agency [O sistema sócio-técnico de moedas e organizações emergentes no blockchain: uma etnografia Economic Space Agency]), Inês Faria (Crypto-anarchy, Markets and New Currencies: a Blockchain-based Political Project [Cripto-anarquia, mercados e novas moedas: um projecto político no blockchain]) and José Manuel Gonçalves Pinto (New Currencies: Limits and Interoperability from a Historical Perspective [As novas moedas: limites e interoperabilidades numa perspetiva histórica]).

A PANEL ON THE BANKING SYSTEM AFTER 2008
On 26 January 2018, a conference panel entitled The Banking System after 2008: Evolutions, Transformations, Continuities was convened in Lisbon. The panel, organized by Daniel Seabra Lopes, was integrated into the First Annual Meeting of Political Economy, hosted by the University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE). It included presentations by team members Daniel Seabra Lopes (The Parliamentary Inquiry Commissions into Banks and the Politicization of Finance) and José Dias Lopes (The Financial Crisis and the Research Agenda on Banking Regulation and Supervision).

1º ENCONTRO ANUAL DE ECONOMIA POLÍTICA
By the end of January 2018, some of the project's team members will participate - with paper presentations and a panel - on the first Anual Meeting of Political Economy (Primeiro Encontro Anual de Economia Política). The event is organised by the Portuguese Association of Political Economy and will take place between the 25th and the 27th ofJanuary 2018 at ISCTE-IUL, in Lisbon.

#micronetworks is a series of public conversations about the future of networked communication. The #3 was dedicated to new emerging protocols - blockchains, cryptocurrencies and other applications currently under development. How is culture, economy and desire affected?

CHANGES AND CONTINUITIES IN POST-2008 FINANCE
In June 2017 the project Finance Beyond Fact and Fiction: financial transformations in post-2008 finance organised its first international seminar, hosted by CSG/SOCIUS-ISEG, in Lisbon. Entitled Changes and Continuities in Post-2008 Finance, the event reflected upon some of the consequences of the 2008 financial crisis from a plural and heterodox point of view, including contributions from the areas of sociology, anthropology and political economy.

Subjects under debate included: financial experimentation with blockchain technology, credit in carbon markets, changes in the banking sector, relationship between political and financial arenas (including financial supervision) and financial literacy.
